PRONING TO MAINTAIN OXYGEN LEVELS

COVID is the burning topic of the hour, with each individual wanting to know more and more about it to help them stay afloat in this time. We are all ready to follow any tip or trick that could be beneficial in any which way. Keeping a tab of oxygen levels with the help of maintaining good ventilation and proning.

The huge load has led to a massive medical oxygen shortage in many states like Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru. Patients are advised to keep recording their oxygen levels and maintain healthy blood oxygen levels i.e. above 94 percent.

The Union Health Ministry has recommended the technique of "proning" to help increase oxygen levels for those in home isolation. Proning is a technique in which the patient lies on the stomach facing downwards, to try and improve the oxygen levels in the body. Oxygen level (SpO2) 94-100 is considered healthy.

How Does Proning Help Covid Positive Patients?

Proning allows for better expansion of the dorsal (back) lung regions, improves body movement and promotes the removal of secretions which may ultimately lead to advances in oxygenation (i.e. breathing).

Steps for Proning the Right Way:

Step 1: Place a pillow below the neck.

Step 2: Place 1 or 2 pillows below the chest and upper thighs.

Step 3: Place 2 pillows below the shins.

Step 4: Place 1 pillow below the head.

Further, you may take turns in lateral lying once to the right side then to the left. Alternate the position every 30 minutes.

Things to Keep in Mind While Proning:

- Proning should be avoided for an hour after meals

- Proning should be practised only until it is easily tolerable

- You may adjust your pillows slightly to alter pressure areas for comfort
