In 2024, Steadfast Nutrition expanded its Iron Women campaign by partnering with four non-governmental organizations (NGOs) — Niveda Foundation, Sashakt Foundation, Sakshi-HUL Nutrition & Education Centre, and Setu Foundation. The campaign’s goal was clear: to educate underprivileged women on critical health issues, including the importance of iron for the body, maintaining menstrual hygiene, and prioritising self-care. Through these efforts, Steadfast helps took sure and steady steps to pave the way for an “Anaemia-Free She,” the theme of this year’s Iron Women campaign.
Educating Women About Iron Deficiency
Anaemia, a condition characterised by a lack of healthy red blood cells, affects 57% of women in India aged 15-49, according to the National Family Health Survey 2019. Iron deficiency anaemia, in particular, can lead to severe health issues if left untreated. Steadfast Nutrition’s campaign aimed to address this widespread health concern by educating women and girls about the symptoms of anaemia, the benefits of an iron-rich diet, and the importance of supplements in combating iron deficiency anaemia.
The campaign not only provided information but also empowered women to take control of their health by understanding the critical role that iron plays in the body. Participants learnt about the insidious symptoms of iron deficiency anaemia — unexplained tiredness, dizziness, headaches, pale skin, and shortness of breath — which are often ignored and under-diagnosed.
Partnering for Impact: NGO Collaborations
At the Sashakt Foundation, Steadfast Athlete and mountaineer Dr Varuna Raina inspired participants with her story of resilience and determination. Having grown up in a rural village with dreams of becoming a top athlete, Dr Raina faced numerous challenges, including a serious head injury. Despite these setbacks, she persevered, showing the power of never giving up.
During her session, Dr Raina emphasised the importance of taking personal responsibility for one’s health. She encouraged women to be proactive about their iron intake, exercise regularly, and maintain a balanced diet. Her motivational speech, coupled with practical advice on self-care, resonated deeply with the attendees, inspiring them to believe in their potential and pursue their dreams.
At the Niveda Foundation, Dr Mridula, a doctor and professional athlete with Steadfast, led a session focused on the importance of health, nutrition, and exercise. She debunked common myths about menstrual health, advocating for self-care and breaking the silence around menstruation. Dr. Mridula’s engaging approach and motivational stories highlighted the importance of putting one's health first, even in challenging circumstances.
Her session also covered post-natal care and the value of a balanced diet rich in essential vitamins and minerals. By encouraging participants to prioritise their well-being, Dr Mridula inspired them to challenge societal norms and take charge of their lives.
Dr Ratna Verma’s session at the Setu Foundation went beyond the usual health education by focusing on self-discovery and empowerment. She emphasised the importance of self-care, urging women to prioritise their health despite the pressures of everyday life. Dr Ratna’s personal story of balancing motherhood, a career, and her passion for mountaineering inspired the participants to embrace their strength and potential.
The session was a safe space for women to share their experiences and learn from each other. Dr Ratna’s powerful message, “We’re just as good as anyone else,” encouraged participants to believe in their worth and capabilities. She stressed the need for self-advocacy, reminding everyone that they have the right to speak up for themselves and pursue their dreams.
At the Sakshi Foundation, Steadfast athlete Megha Sharma led a vibrant session on self-love and happiness. Having left a 12-year corporate career to pursue her passion for Zumba, Megha shared her journey of self-discovery and the importance of following one’s heart. Her story resonated with many, highlighting the value of patience and persistence in finding true fulfilment.
Megha’s session was filled with joy and energy, as she encouraged participants to dance and celebrate life. Her message was clear: “You need to start small and aim big.” By setting realistic, time-bound goals, Megha emphasized that anyone can achieve great things without rushing the process.
